Default Excel 2002 file is suddenly read-only?

In xls file I open almost everyday, has suddenly decided to be
read-only...at least according to the Excel 2002 error message that started
popping up today. I checked the file's properties, and it's not set for
read-only (read-only is unchecked). I'm not sure what to do about this,
does anyone have a suggestion?

Is it already open in another instance of Excel?
Was it properly closed when last used?
Perhaps it has become 'corrupt'!
