In a drop down box - how do you leave a blank as an option that you can enter
data in?

If you mean that you want to be able to either just leave the cell blank or
to delete a value already selected from the the list: On the Settings tab of
the Data Validation dialog, make sure "Ignore blanks" is checked.

If you mean that you want to be able to enter something that is not on the
dropdown list, without receiving an error: On the Error Alert tab of the Data
Validation dialog, uncheck the "Show error alert after invalid data is
entered" option.

Hope this helps,

Hutch

If you're talking about a Data Validation drop-down,
enter the choices in a range and leave an empty cell in that range.

Assign a name to the range and use that name in the "Source" box,
preceded with an = sign:

=rangename

OR

uncheck the error message dialog.

Consider using two cells.

Say the drop-down is in cell A1 and it reference Z1 thru Z10. Use Z1 thru
Z9 as the normal choices and in Z10 put:

=B9

So if the user want there own value (rather than the pre-canned list), have
them fill-in B9 and it will appear as a valid drop-down choice.
