Try open pdf from the Start menu. Then go to File Menu - OPen - and select
the file. I assumed you went to the window explorer and double clicked the
file. Try both methods. Also check the size of the file. Large adobe files
will take a long time to open.

Joel, thanks for the response. The file, and adobe work fine outside of
EXCEL. However when I attempt to open a pdf file through excel my computer
'thinks' for a moment and then stops. I checked the processes and the exe.
for adobe is running but not doing anything. For adobe to work properly
again i have to log out or shut down. It's like the link that i create
corrupts adobe and I'm wondering why excel changes the format of the path.

Default Hyperlink: Linking problem when link to file

Did you try opening the file by clicking on the shortcut outside of excel
(from window explorer)? What is the size of the file?

A number of different possibility can cause problems

1) A memory problem
2) The shortcut link to adobe is not correct.
3) Problems when index service is enabled on the PC This is indicated by the
process cisvc.exe (kill the service and retry opening the file).
4) A network problem. Try to move the file to the C:\ drive instead of a
network file and see if there is a difference.

1. check
2. works
3. this didnt do anything
4. this works: when I take off network there was no problem. I use excel on
my c: drive and link to files on the server. (note the file folders link
fine to excel, its when i want to open a file that utilizes a program that i
have problems with) What do you suggest next?

Do you think there is some type of patch/hotfix available? (or is this even
the issue)
Do you think if I load excel to server and link everything on that level it
will fix the problem?

How long is the pathnamed? I think there is a limitation of around 128
character. Network pathnames tend to be long a maybe the source of the
problem.

Does the problem happened with other type files? (from the same directory)
Try puttting a link to an excel file in the same directory as see if it
opens. I don't think it is a problem just witth PDF???

Try lettingexcel open the files for a lonjg time like 10 to 15 mionutes to
make sure it isn't a slow process. I don't linke the indexing service
cisvc.exe. It really slowed down opening Office products on my PC. Make
sure it was killed.

The problem does NOT happen with other file types (word was placed on the
same level as the PDF that I am having trouble with) I tried placing the PDF
on another level and the problem is still there.

My best GUESS is that it is an adobe problem and not an excel problem. Try
putting a hyperlink into a work document and see if the same thing happens.
You still didn't say how long the path name is?

I found this in adobe documentation

Individual parameters, together with their values (separated by & or #), can
be no greater then 32 characters in length.

One thing you can try is mapping a new drive. Instead of mapping the new
drive to the roo directory map the new drive to a subdirectory so you path
name becomes shorter.

Instead of K:\root

use new drive letter Z:\root\sub1\sub12\sub13\sub14

Default Hyperlink: Linking problem when link to file

The length of the filename string is 99 characters. I suspect this is the
problem. Not sure.

If it is a company network you could try mapping a drive such as T: to the
path and see if it works from a mapped drive.

In window explorer, Tools - Map Netwrok Drive

PDF files have a number of different prilidges rights besides the normal
read/write. These prilidges included commmenting, modifying (still write but
can't change). as well as others. I think you may need to contact adobe for
more info.

1. check

4. this works: when I take off network there was no problem.

"Joel" wrote:

Did you try opening the file by clicking on the shortcut outside of excel
(from window explorer)? What is the size of the file?

A number of different possibility can cause problems

1) A memory problem
2) The shortcut link to adobe is not correct.
3) Problems when index service is enabled on the PC This is indicated by the
process cisvc.exe (kill the service and retry opening the file).
4) A network problem. Try to move the file to the C:\ drive instead of a
network file and see if there is a difference.

Try open pdf from the Start menu. Then go to File Menu - OPen - and select

will take a long time to open.

Here is the path when I click "ok":

Default Hyperlink: Linking problem when link to file

There is a known issue with Adobe Reader 7.0 that causes PDF files to not be
opened from a hyperlink in Office products. If you upgrade to Adobe 7.1 or
higher you should be fine.

I think you may need to contact adobe for
more info.

not sure if i said below but when i link to a word file that far into a
directory it worksm but again does not work for pdf.

here is the path name that does not work I think it is something like 97
characters....
\\Ntserver\public\BIG Industrial\Available Properties
Link\AL/Birmingham/4700 Pinson Valley Parkway

One thing you can try is mapping a new drive. Instead of mapping the new
drive to the roo directory map the new drive to a subdirectory so you path
name becomes shorter.

Instead of K:\root

use new drive letter Z:\root\sub1\sub12\sub13\sub14

"Joel" wrote:

My best GUESS is that it is an adobe problem and not an excel problem. Try
putting a hyperlink into a work document and see if the same thing happens.
You still didn't say how long the path name is?

I found this in adobe documentation

Individual parameters, together with their values (separated by & or #), can
be no greater then 32 characters in length.

The problem does NOT happen with other file types (word was placed on the

Hi! tsmith1977 i hope my reply has able to help you;

1. first make a map the folder from the network that contain a PDF
file

Note: Please make sure that their no special character on the filename

open the share folder

Ex: Z:\PDFFILES\test.pdf

path )

not like this ..\PDFFILES\test.pdf ( incorect path )
