Default Smart Art graphics in Excel 2007

I am trying to use smartart graphics in excel 2007 but my problem is trying
to reference a cell to display the results in the smartart. The reason is
that I have to do a report due on Monday and the results change, week to
week.
I have tried an article by Mr. Excel on how to do this but the return button
in the formula bar won't respond after typing in a cell reference. It just
sits there.
He suggests converting Smartart into Autoshape.
Anyone have any ideas?
