Microsoft Office 2007 is used on a XP machine....

If the file is a tab delimited text file but has an xls extension it is not surprising that you get the message: The file you are trying to open, [Filename], is in a different format than specified by the file extension. I would think that you need to change the file extension used to be .txt or .prn (I am not expert in web page links so I can't help you to achieve that; you could seek help in a forum that specialises in web page design).
