Default merge workbooks

Whilel using the Microsoft Office Specialist Study Guide Office 2003 Edition:
I wanted to try using the Merge Workbooks (ref. page 393 & 394) while in
my excel program from my home program and the program at work. Under Tools
Menu the Compare & Merge Documents is shaded and I am unable to use or
practice with. I tried to use the both instructions showing in the MOS Excel
2003 Expert Exam and instructions listed in the HELP menu in Excel program
both instructions are little different. But neither function.
Thank You

Default merge workbooks

Compare and Merge is only available if the workbook is shared and you want to
merge multiple versions of same workbook.

See help on "merge workbooks".

Default merge workbooks

Does the File need to be sharded workbook before distributation to employees.
Was able to get two files (same info on both) into the SHARED Workbook but
could not merge. STOP BOX states: Copies made from same shared wkbk, & must
all maintain the change history for a sufficient amount of time." When I ask
for Help or OK radio buttons: Help pop-up window is blank (no info showing).
