Default Merged cells & column widths

This is a repost from the general questions section, but I didn't really
include enough information and I'm sure the question should have been
directed here. I have a spreadsheet that gets exported from Focus that
merges headings throughout the spreadsheet whenever a competitor name
changes. I need to change the column widths of several non-contiguous
columns, and would like to provide the user with a macro that would do this
for her automatically. I can size the columns manually, but if I record my
steps all of the columms go to that column width. I've seen many references
here about this problem, but am wondering if there's a way to get these
column widths programmatically. If not I'll go back to the programmer and
see what I can get changed on their end. Thanks for any help on this!
