Default data disappears when I press F2 to edit

I'm using XL 2002 and have noticed that when I have a cell that is populated with data and I press F2 (to edit the data), the data disappears

Does anyone have any idea what causes this? I need people to be able to edit the values in cells, not have to retype everything that was in the cell

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Joe
