Default Excel 5 on Windows XP (2)

I've installed Excel 5 on Windows XP with Office XP installed as well. I'm
having a lot of trouble with various macro functionality. When I try to run a
macro in Excel 5 that is not very basic I get the following message:
'Run-time error '1004'; Work03.xls: file format is not valid'. However if I
have a very basic macro it will run. Another problem is that some auto-open
macros run part way and then just stop without showign an error message.

Has anyone out there tried the same? If so, have you run into similar
problems? How were they resolved?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated,

Roger
