It sounds like you are in Extend Select mode. F8 starts/stops Extend Select
mode; if it is on, you should see the word EXT near the bottom right of your screen. Pressing F8 should toggle it off. It is also possible you have invoked StickyKeys accidentally. This is one of the Accesssibility features in Windows (to help people who are paralyzed, missing limbs, etc.) If you press the left Shift key 5 times in a short span of time, StickyKeys may be turned on. Pressing Shift 5 times quickly again may turn it off. If it doesn't, go to Accessibility Options in Control Panel and turn it off there (at the moment, I am in an environment with tight enough security that I can't access much in Control Panel, so forgive me for not being more specific).
