Default Turn off Automatic Selection of Multiple cells.

In 2007 Excel, where ever I select a single cell, a box appears highlighting
at least three adjacent cells. Sometimes below, sometimes to one side. This
is distracting and aggravating and I want to see only the cell selected...
Tried hitting F8, but that doesn't work.
