Default I want to lock row 1 in Excel. Why is "Freeze Panes" grayed out?

I've done this before, and am baffled. I now have Vista/MS Office 2007. The
worksheet is save in 2003 compatibility mode.

Is the worksheet protected??? Unprotect it is it is.

No, it is not protected, but thanks for the reply. What does HTH mean?
