By default all cells in a worksheet are protected but this only becomes
active if the worksheet is proected so try this:-

Select all cells and then
Format|Cells|protection and removed the locked checkmark
Then select column C and repeat the above but this time add the checkmark
Protect your sheet and your done.
Caveat this isn't secure

Default Protect just 1 column

Followed this - then wanted to see if I could get around it. True it
wouldn't let me make a change without a password but I was able to copy the
sheet and paste in a new sheet then make a change. I am using excel 2000 -
is the 'protection' feature in 2000 inferior to later years? ps I am just
learning excel

thanks

Protect the workbook for structure then users will not be able to insert a new
worksheet or delete the current protected sheet.

Although they could copy the cells, paste in a new workbook, delete your
workbook, rename their copy as your workbook and then what would you do?

Workbook and sheet protection has not been "upgraded" in newer versions.

Note: Excel internal security is very weak and passwords easily cracked.
