Can anybody tell me how to protect a column in the shared workbook?

Hi,

select whole worksheet (or all of them), format - cells - protection -
disable "locked", then select column you want to protect and enable "locked"
(format - cells...) and then protect sheet/workbook.
Excel actually protects only the cells (in your case whole column) that have
selected Locked.
