Default paste copied text to only one cell

Now you know why most experts in this group recommend avoiding merged cells
like the plague.

Related to this is if the 'source' cell is in a 'merged' format
combining a number of cells, but the 'target' cell needs to be just
one cell, the paste special command will over write cells adjacent to
the target cell.
How is it possible to prevent this from occurring either in a macro or
in a manual operation?

an add to the text in the single cell.

Appreciate any help.
