Default *.tmp file creation in Excel

Everytime I open an Excel and work with it, a *.tmp file is created. It will
look like this: Itinerary.xls~RF65c4641.

When I close Excel, these *.tmp files don't close and I'm unable to delete
them.

I know that in Word a backup file can be created while you work and those
files close when Word or the file you're working on is closed. I looked for
something like this in Excel but couldn't find anything like that.

Ideas?
