Default Unexplained File sinze Increase

The file used for mail merge with word has increased to over 6 times the size
that it should be. Information is copied to this file weekly from a
downloaded file. The file the information is copied from is 2.07 MB; the
problem file that the information is copied to is 13.5 MB. The spreadsheet
currently has 395 rows and 71 columns. Have been researching this problem
for over 6 months. Have tried creating a new file with a new name, which is
inconvenient since the file is used for mail merge and needs to be set-up
each time the file name is change. Saving the file with a new name is only a
very temporary solution. This is not a shared file, but a solution
suggestion I found was to stop saving history on a shared file. Made the
file shared and stopped saving history and this made no difference. Also,
have tried deleting any extra row ahd columns; none are found. Have tried
using Save As rather than save; this made no difference. It took over 5
minutes to delete 50 rows on this spreadsheet. Hope someone can help with a
solution.
