Default Protect only certain Cells?

I've tried & tried to protect only certain cells in a worksheet to protect
formulae, but can't seem to find how to do it. Any suggestions?

All cells are "locked" by default, but "locking" does not mean anything until
you protect the worksheet from the "Tools-Protection" menu. So your first
task is to select any cells that a user IS allowed to change (use the ctrl
button to select all of them at once), then hit Ctrl+1 and go to the
"Security" tab to unlock those cells. Then go to Tools-Protection-Protect
Sheet, and you can assign a password or not.
