In many parts of Excel, you have to remember to type F2 after making the
text box the focus, and before starting to use the navigation keys, or
else it thinks you're navigating in the spreadsheet instead of in the
box. It's annoying, and I always forget, but once you make the first
keystroke and discover your mistake, you should be able to hit F2, then
backspace over the inserted cell reference before entering your text.

However, as Jon says, isn't using a range of cells, then referring to
that range, going to be easier in the long run?
