Default commands are disabled and I can't enter data

Sounds like your worksheet is protected. Try one of these:
Excel 2003 and earlier: Tools -- Protection -- Unprotect Sheet

Excel 2007: Home tab, Cells group, use the Format drop-down and Unprotect
Sheet near the bottom of the list.
