Make sure you are in Normal View--Freeze panes doesn't work in Page Layout
View.

Default Freeze Panes in Excel 2007 - Vista

excuse top posting

using office 2007 sp1 on vista business

On my version of excel, view/freeze panes generates 3 options
1 unfreeze panes
2 freeze top row
3 freeze 1st column

there is no option merely marked 'freeze panes'
hence I can't freeze both the row and the columns I want which I could
in all previous versions of excel

please advise

Then you already have frozen panes.

The "UNfreeze panes" option ONLY appears when panes have been frozen.
