Default Excel filees being converted to zip files

I'm an instructor teaching Office 2007 for the first time and using a
distance learning system called WebCt VISTA. I recently gave a test to my
students that had them uploading a completed Excel 2007 file to WebCT. When I
decided to download the file it came downloaded as a "zipped" file with the
following folders: _rels, docProps, xl, and several seperate files. Is Excel
2007 converting the files could it be our distance learning program doing
this. I'd sure appreciate anyone's help.

Excel 2007 files are actually ZIP files. Have at look at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/he...069351033.aspx
I once downloaded an XL2007 file from a website and it was saved as
filename.ZIP. I renamed filename.XLSX and it opened with no problem in Excel
2007
best wishes

Steve,

With Excel 2007, the file format of an Excel workbook was changed. Instead
of being a single (extremely complex) binary file, called a BIFF8 file, a
2007 file is really a zip file containing a number XML files along with a
few binary files. You can unzip it with PKZip or WinZip and edit the XML
with Notepad or your favorite XML editor. I suspect it is an incompatibility
between your WebCT software and the new Excel file format.
