Default Viewing data in Excel while scrolling. Instead of the cell count?

How do you change this feature?
When I scroll it shows the cell numbers.
I'd like to see the data scrolling instead.
We have several computers here and both options are setup. I can't find
where to change this feature as it would be more helpfull to see the data as
I scroll through the document.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Upgrade to a newer version of excel.

I think xl2k was the last version to show those yellow row tooltips when you
scrolled.

Xl2002 added the live scrolling.

This feature has never worked for me on my current computer (Inspiron 9300,
ALL latest Windows XP Pro updates, nvidia GeForce 6800) even with newer
versions of Excel.

Is there any other way to turn this on? It's like once it got turned off
somehow, no version of Office will turn it back on, and I've no idea how to
overcome this. Very annoying, and very troublesome--this is an extremely
important feature for me, and no one--and I mean NO ONE (in my experience,
after querying many people over the last few years)--seems to have any idea
how to solve this problem.

Any ideas, even wild ones, would be nice. (Not including reformatting drive
C:.... That may resolve the problem, though: this machine is an upgrade from
an older machine with the same issue, and I used some PC Mover kind of stuff
to bring the old system setup over the to new machine--mutatis mutandis,
working fine in all respects except this one thing....)

Thanks for any best guesses--I will gladly send anyone who solves this some
candy. :)

I inexplicably forgot to mention that I'm currently7 running (a trial version
of ) Office 2007 now, and of course that hasn't solved the problem. It's
still as though I'm running Office/Excel 97: a little tooltip giving me the
target row number, but no real-time, smooth, live scrolling as I slide the
vertical scroll bar. (Or horizontal.)

xl2k and below have the yellow row tooltips and no live scrolling.
xl2002 and xl2003 have no tooltips and live scrolling
xl2007 has both.

What version of excel are you using?

We have a lady in one of our remote offices having the same problem as
John is describing with the Excel 2003 live scrolling. Prior to last
week it worked fine, then all of a sudden when she scrolls using the
scroll bar the page doesn't move and she get's the little tooltip with
the row number on it. When she let's go of the mouse it jumps to that
row.

She's using Excel 2003 and also has a Dell Laptop, though I'm not sure
which model. I'm looking into that. She hasn't loaded any new software
or done any Office updates, but she thinks maybe it started when she
accidentally hit a couple keys at the same time. She isn't exactly
sure which keys she hit.

Is there maybe some undocumented hotkey combination that toggles this
feature on and off in later versions of Excel? I've been looking for
three days in various forums and the only thing I can find is several
posts by John here all describing the problem, but no one that knows
how to fix it.

If you find out what did it, please post back.

And the next time it happens, maybe look at Help|about to check the version of
excel. Maybe she has two versions of excel installed?????

Well, I'm using the trial version of Excel 2007. But I must emphasize, this
is something that has been true for me, alas, in all of Excel 2002, 2003, and
2007--maybe 2000, also, but I do not recall.

It has to be a holdover setting somewhere, I'd think, but I've no idea where.

Thanks for any suggestions.

John

That occured to me as well and I had already had her check that. I
even had her send me a screenshot of the about screen. It's Excel 2003
with SP2.

We fixed her problem, but I can't explain it. It doesn't really make
sense to me.

Just out of curiosity I was having her check various settings on the
pc just to make sure everything looked as it should. I had her check
the System, Advanced, Performance settings. This is on XP by the way.
One of the settings in that list is "Smooth-scroll list boxes". I
don't think this really has anything to do with the problem, but not
having anything else to do I had her uncheck this box, save changes,
then go back in and check the box again. When we did this Windows
somehow took the opportunity to change her Windows Desktop theme as
well. Not sure why it did this, but there's a lot of things in this
situation I don't understand. Anyway, she went back and set her
desktop theme to Windows Classic.

After doing all this for some reason her scrolling works correctly in
Excel now. Like I said, it doesn't make sense to me, but it's working
now so she's happy.

As I read the comments, I went everywhere to find what you're all talking
about. It's been so frustrating for me being the Excel wizard and not able
to work quickly without the ability to scroll.

I thought it was the mouse properties, then I went into the Advanced
settings, even messed around the Excel options settings.

Now when someone said they were hitting buttons on the keyboard and got it
to move, I stared at my keyboard for a few seconds and....

If you hold down the 'Ctrl' key while scrolling with the mouse wheel, it'll
work!

Now, being that Excel 2007 is the newest version, it seems ridiculous that
they would add another step to just scrolling over your spreadsheet using
your mouse!

I hope this helps, but if anyone can find another solution... please share!
