Default conditional formatting

I am sure this has been answered before and is detailed on this
internet somewhere. But I have not found it

I can get CF (Conditional Formatting) to work when comparing the value
of r1c1 to r1c2. If they are not equal I make the c2 cell red. Works
great on that 1 row.

Bur I want to copy that format in the CF to all the following rows so
that

r2c1 compares to r2c2
r3c1 compares to r3c2
r4c1 compares to r4c2
..
..
..

r500c1 compares to r500c2

when I try to copy the format to sellected rows it is always based on
the value of the 1st row.

Help or direction in solving this head scratcher would be appreciated

Remove the reference to R1 in the conditional formating. Within the
Conditional Formatting window you would have:

"Cell Value is" "not equal to" "RC1" and the Format would be your colour.
This will allow the column to be locked in at C1 and allow the row to varry.

Regards,

Dan
