sorting error

I get the following (2 examples) sorting errors in a straight-forward sort on
a column.
Cannot find any error report on this?

Example 1 (doesn't handle V and W correctly?)

VAP2
WAP3
WAP4
WAP7
WAPRL
WAPZR
VASK

Example 2

V_V2
V-12
V12L_C
V23
V-34
V-38
