Default autosum on the taskbar?

I got a new computer and am missing a function I loved on my old one. In
Excel, I could highlite a group of numbers with my mouse and the sum of those
numbers would appear on the lower right hand corner of my taskbar. How do I
get that function back?

Maybe your status bar is turned off (?) ; check via Tools -- Options --

Or if it is not turned off right click on the NUM and select SUM just in
case NONE is selected
