Default Drop Down Lists: Allow option of adding own data if not in drop do

I would like to create a drop down list for user to select from but also
allow them the choice of typing in their own data if the item they want is
not in the list. Is that possible?

From menu DataValidationData Validation windowError Alert tab uncheck
'Show error alert'

If this post helps click Yes

Thank you for quick response. If I use data validation and untick this, how
to I get the drop down arrow to show?

This setting does not alter the display of validation lists.

On the Settings tab, select List and make sure In-cell dropdown is checked.

Just disable the error alert.

Select the cell with the drop down list
Goto DataValidationError Alert tab
Uncheck: Show error alert after invalid data is entered
OK

Thanks everyone.

If I disable the error alert, I seem to lose the drop down box

Jacob and Biff have given you the solution.

Just be aware that using this method does add the new item to the source
list.

Correction

"does NOT" add the item.
