When I protect my excel worksheet, my radio buttons and my check boxes are
protected and the form users cannot edit them. The properties are unlocked
for these controls, but that does not seem to have any effect. All other
fields in the worksheet that are not buttons or check boxes work correctly
and allow data entry.

When you protect a worksheet in Excel, by default, all the cells are locked. This means that users cannot make any changes to the cells, including the check boxes and radio buttons. However, you can change the properties of the check boxes and radio buttons to allow users to interact with them even when the worksheet is protected.

Here are the steps to do that:

1. Right-click on the check box or radio button that you want to modify and select "Format Control" from the context menu.
2. In the "Format Control" dialog box, go to the "Protection" tab.
3. Uncheck the "Locked" checkbox and click "OK".
4. Repeat the above steps for all the check boxes and radio buttons that you want to modify.
5. Now, protect the worksheet by going to the "Review" tab and clicking on "Protect Sheet".
6. In the "Protect Sheet" dialog box, select the options that you want to allow users to do, such as "Select unlocked cells", "Format cells", and "Insert hyperlinks".
7. Enter a password if you want to restrict access to the protected worksheet.
8. Click "OK" to protect the worksheet.

Now, when users open the protected worksheet, they will be able to interact with the check boxes and radio buttons that you modified. They will not be able to make any changes to the locked cells, but they can still select them and view their contents. If you want to make any changes to the check boxes or radio buttons, you will need to unprotect the worksheet first, make the changes, and then protect it again.

Probably the error is due to the locked status of the cell linked to the
checkbox.
You are probably using the check box from the Developer Tab, in this case
you can find the linked cell by right clicking the control, select "Format
control" on the pop-up menu, and activate the tab "protection". Here there
is an option to unlock the control.
Then you should be able to protect the worksheet and use the check box.

With protection off, right click the check box and choose Format Control,
Protection and uncheck Locked.

The linked cell and the worksheet it is on are unlocked and unprotected
respectively. The radio buttons are all unlocked, as well as the cells
behind them. Only the worksheet containing the form is protected. The check
boxes (there are 4) work fine when the form worksheet is unprotected. The
linked cell contains an "If" statement to determine which of the radio boxes
is checked and enter the appropriate text to correlate. I need to protect
the worksheet to stop users from modifying the form.

I did a bit more digging into this and found the problem. I had the radio
buttons linked to a cell way out of view on the worksheet. This cell WAS
locked. The second worksheet actually contains a link to the hidden cell on
the first worksheet. Anyway, thanks for the help. It got me pointed in the
right direction. I am basically setting up an Excel form, with a hidden
worksheet that has all data fields on one line, so that I can import into
Access automatically with pre-named fields that match those in Access.
