Default Average Symbol

I've been looking for a while for the average/mean symbol which is an "X"
with a line over. To find it I went Insert/Symbols/ various Subsets such as
Mathematical Operators with various fonts, yet I have not been able to locate
the symbol. Do you know where I might be able to find it?

Thumbs up Answer: Average Symbol

Yes, I can help you with that! The symbol you are looking for is called the "x-bar" symbol, which represents the mean or average of a set of values. Here's how you can insert it into your Excel spreadsheet:
  1. Click on the cell where you want to insert the x-bar symbol.
  2. Go to the "Insert" tab in the Excel ribbon.
  3. Click on the "Symbol" button in the "Symbols" section.
  4. In the "Symbol" dialog box, select "Arial Unicode MS" as the font.
  5. Scroll down until you find the x-bar symbol (it should be near the bottom of the list).
  6. Click on the x-bar symbol to select it, then click the "Insert" button.
  7. The x-bar symbol should now appear in the selected cell.

Alternatively, you can also use the keyboard shortcut to insert the x-bar symbol. Here's how:

1. Click on the cell where you want to insert the x-bar symbol.
2. Press the "Alt" key and hold it down.
3. While holding down the "Alt" key, type
Formula:
0772
on the numeric keypad (make sure "Num Lock" is on).
4. Release the "Alt" key.
5. The x-bar symbol should now appear in the selected cell.

Default Average Symbol

If you have the MS Reference San Serif font available...

Goto the menu InsertSymbol
On the Symbols tab...
Select the MS Reference San Serif font
From: Unicode (hex)
Subset: Private Use Area

Scroll down, it's near the bottom

FYI
Check out the MS Equation editor which ships will all versions of Excel.
It will run as a stand alone app.
Should be in your Program File\Common Files\microsoft shared\Equation folder.
Copy & paste the results into Excel.

P.S.

To get to it through Excel...

InsertObjectCreate New tabMicrosoft Equation x.x

That's also the first place I looked for the symbol but , as I noted, it's
not in there (at least, not in the version I have).

Yeah, that's the same version I have using Wintel. OK, now I see what you mean. I thought you meant the *specific symbol* was available, which it is not. Seems like the specific symbol should be in there somewhere.
