Macros help

Now when I try to open my workbook (that now has a xlms extention) I get This file is not a recognizable format, how do I get my work back to where it was? I have no idea how it happened but I was told to down load a convertor for excel (2007 convertor) and then open. It worked, and I don't understand since I built it in 2003.
