Default 2 versions of the same worksheet *.xls:1 & *.xls:2 - Why ?

I have a worksheet with 2 versions of the same worksheet, with *xls:2 with
formatting and updated info and *.xls:1 with info at some point in time in
the past. I don't how different versions of the same worksheet with the same
name get created.
