Default excel puts dates instead of numbers when typed

I am using Excel inventory. sometimes when I try to put a number in a slot
instead of the number such as 1 it puts 1-jan. no matter how I put the number
in it keeps changing it to a calender date.

Select the range of cells giving the problem and use Format | Cells |
General
They must have been formatted as dates (this can happen if you enter a date
or something Excel takes to be a date)
best wishes

Perhaps the cell has been pre-formatted as a date. Select the cell
again and click Format | Cells | Number (tab) and change the format to
General, or Number with 0 decimal places.

Hope this helps.
