Default PivotTable: string data ittem filed?

I am just beginning to use PivotTable.

I use a numeric field as the data item. Additionally, there is a string
field as a kind of description. Is it possible to use this string field as a
data item? So I just want to display in the most detailed level. And
subtotal and grand total is just for the numeric data field.

Is that possible?

Thanks!
