Default Automatic List Numbering

Automatic List Numbering
I can't get John Walkenbach's tip to work.
I use the formula =IF(B1<"",COUNTA($B$1:B1)&".","")
The list numbers don't display, just the formulas.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Devon

i have no problem with the formula, so my first guess would be that the
cells were formatted as text prior to entry of the data - insert a new
column and give that a go. Additionally, you might have your workbook set
up to display formulas instead of their results - try tools / options /
view - and untick formulas.

Hope this helps
