column and give that a go. Additionally, you might have your workbook

up to display formulas instead of their results - try tools / options /
view - and untick formulas.

I can't get John Walkenbach's tip to work.
I use the formula =IF(B1<"",COUNTA($B$1:B1)&".","")
The list numbers don't display, just the formulas.
