Default Overwiting data in Excel 2003

I have to do some cutting and pasting of data and sometimes have not inserted
enough free rows to accommodate all the data. As a consequence I have
overwritten existing data without realising it at the time. Is there a way I
can avoid this happening?

Thanks very much!
