Default Why does a § (section) appear when I input a £ (pound) in Excel?

A § (section symbol) appears when I try to input a £ (pound symbol) by
pressing Shift 3. This only happens in Excel, and not Word or Powerpoint or
Windows. My regional settings are all set to English UK. If I exit my
workbook and restart Excel the problem is resolved, as if I have enabled a
'feature' by mistake, but I don't know what it is or how to turn it off!
