I do my best never to let excel guess the range to sort/filter/chart/pivottable.
And I've never seen any of those fail if I select the range first--no matter how many gaps there were. I have no idea why it didn't work for tombogman. I did not realise that you had to select the range BEFORE applying the autofilter.
