Default Excel File Format SUDDENLY Not Valid-What happened?????

I tried to open an Excel Workbook that I last used a couple of weeks ago and
got an error message the the file format was not valid; I''ve never seen
thise before and as I say, it was fine a couple of weeks ago. What happened?

check the file extension. It should be .xls
it might have been accidently changed.
