Default How to copy charts

I have a simple line chart, and wist to copy the chart and its
associated data a large number of times down my spreadsheet, so that I
can enter different data to generate similar charts. However, the chart
data references are absolute references eg $a$1:$c$4. When I remove
the dollars, and then unselect the chart and re-select it, the dollars
are back. Can charts be forced to use relative references?
