A few years ago I upgraded from Office 97 to Office XP. I raely use Excel and
when I open it, it shows as Office 97. My other Office applications all seem
to be OK. Why didn't Excel upgrade and how can I correct?

1)Do a search for EXCEL.EXE; maybe you have both versions installed
2)Reinstall Office 2002 (no need to uninstall) and make sure you specify
Excel is needed

Did the search. Both versions appear in the list. The 97 version is listed in
"blue". Should I just delete 97 and will 2002 then open?

"Blue" usually means the file is compressed.

I would lean toward re-registering Excel before I deleted any files.

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1) StartRun "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)OK.
2) StartRun "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

In your case, I would designate a full path to excel.exe from Office XP.
In that case StartRun "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.

One more thing to try if any of the above brings no joy.........

Go to StartSettingsFolderOptionsFile Types. Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet. Then if running Win98 OS Edit select "Open" and Edit.

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced"OpenEdit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE10\EXCEL.EXE" /e (delete the <sp/e
if you want Book1 to open.

You must have the double quotes.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

If not, I think I would uninstall office XP, uninstall office 97 and then
reinstall office xp.

If you want both installed...

If you're starting excel by double clicking on a .xls file (say in windows
explorer), then I bet Gord's suggestion will work nicely for you.

But if you're starting excel by doubleclicking a shortcut to excel, make sure
that shortcut points to the correct excel.exe (xl2002 version) (check the
complete path in the shortcut).

I'd rather not uninstall XP as I went through a lot of problems when I
upgraded, and since Xp was an upgrade, I would need 97 there to reinstall the
upgrade. I tried Gord's suggestions, but either I misfired somewhere or
there's more to it. If you send me an excel file it will open in 2002. If I
try to open from StartPrograms I get 97. I'm not going there from a shortcut.

Any other thoughts?

Actually, if you use
Windows Start button|Programs
you are using a shortcut.

I think I'd create a new shortcut, though (I think it'd be easiest).

Open windows explorer
traverse to that folder that contains excel.exe for xl2002.
rightclick on that excel.exe
choose Send to
then desktop (create shortcut)

Then minimize everything.
find that shortcut

Depending on the version of windows (not office, not excel), there are a couple
of things you can do.

If you're using WinXP, you can rightclick on that shortcut and drag it over the
Start button--don't let go!

The start button will expand.
Keep dragging over Programs (but don't let go)
find the program group you want to place the shortcut in and drag over that.
Finally let go.

Since you rightclicked on the shortcut, you can either choose to move that
shortcut or copy it to that location.

If you're using an earlier version of Windows, you can get to that same location
in a different manner.
