Running Excel 2003. Upgraded it specifically to import (cut and paste) CSV
files. Our brokerage house runs 2003 and does cut and paste the *.csv file.
It will not work on our machine. I've loaded the Office Converter Pack, and
no difference. All of the MS help files indicate Excel will convert CSV
files (presumably without an external Macro). Any help out there?

In Excel, select File - Open. Navigate to the CSV file, (make sure you
select Files of Type: All Files in the lower portion of the File-Open
Dialog). Select your CSV file, click Open and then an import wizard will
appear....

More detail (so I look not entirely foolish). The file at issue is an export
file from a brokerage house (remote via the Internet from my machine). Their
"export" offers two formats: QIF or CSV, I want to manipulate their
"exported data" so I need the CSV version. If I try to paste the file onto
my machine, nada. If I put their file into word, it will not load. They
claim they can "paste" the file into Excel 2003. A four day search for a
solution (hence, this query in the user group). Cheers

get the file onto my machine in order to navigate to it to open. A brain

Can you see the CSV-file at the remote location?
Then you should be possible to download it.

Or is it just a view of the file's contents on the screen?

Well, I can, in fact, see it. In fact, I can copy it and the content all
shows up. I can paste it into Word and the data is there; same with pasting
into Excel. The "Open" command in Excel does not offer me a CSV option,
although (as you know, I'm certain) it does offer XMP and other formats.
Again, all of the MS help material says CSV and Excel are compatible.
Mystifying. Not sure how you might suggest I download it (no FTP available
at the remote site (plus the only two format available, as I said, are QIF
and CSV). Your suggestions will, I can assure you, be more than welcome.

Do I understand correctly that you can see it as some kind of a data sheet,
not as a filename in a directory or in a downloadable link?
If there is a link, right-clicking it might offer you to save it locally as
a file: "Save link as".

Because that is what you need, store it on your disk locally and open it
from within Excel.
That would give you all the tools to get it right in a sheet and do all the
things with it that Excel offers.

Excel can open text files in TXT - CSV - PRN formats.

So, is there really no way to get the data file?

So, your suggestion was on point! I had to save it as a text file. Excel
did accept it and the import wizard came alive. I have not as yet verified
that the data are correct, but if not, the errors will be minor and
manageable. Thanks for the help. I've suggested to the brokerage that they
think about moving into the XML arena, although that may not be a good idea
either.
