How about putting your personal.xls on the network drive, but then putting a
shortcut to that file inside your XLStart.

Untested on a network, but I put my personal.xla in c:\. I put a shortcut to
that file in my XLStart folder and when I opened excel, my personal.xla was
there.

Personally, I'd be hesitant to do this. What happens if the network is down,
that share is down, or you're not connected to the network.

On the other hand, I would keep backups on the network (and other places, too).

You should be able to save your personal.xls file and just copy it into the
XLStart folder when you get that new harddrive. (How often do you get that new
harddrive???)

I work with excel a lot and I have a lot of macros saved to my personal macro
workbook - my question is can I save that personal.xls to a network drive
instead of the XLstart folder and will it work the same?

Any time I get a new hard drive, new install of office - I have to start
over with my macros.
