I work with excel a lot and I have a lot of macros saved to my personal macro
workbook - my question is can I save that personal.xls to a network drive instead of the XLstart folder and will it work the same? Any time I get a new hard drive, new install of office - I have to start over with my macros. |

I don't think you can move it as the XLStart directory is determined at
install time.So if you have a local install, the XLStart will be local. But it is just a workbook, take a copy and save it, maybe on the network. -- HTH RP (remove nothere from the email address if mailing direct) "Erika" wrote in message ... That is kind of what I was thinking - I was just hoping there was some sort
of file location I could change like in word with the Normal.dot that I could point to my personal.xls instead of either A. recreating all my macros or B. remembering to make a copy of my personal.xls "Bob Phillips" wrote: I don't think you can move it as the XLStart directory is determined at install time.So if you have a local install, the XLStart will be local. There should be, but Excel doesn't seem to define the XLStart directory in
ToolsOptions. Pity, I agree. I always back mine up anyway, too useful not to. -- HTH RP (remove nothere from the email address if mailing direct) "Erika" wrote in message ... This is in the help file:-
About the location of your settings The location of your settings in your user profile depends on the operating system you use and the way your system administrator has configured your user profile on the server. You can find your user profile in the following location: Root\OS\Profiles\User_name where Root is a server location or a folder on a drive from which all other folders branch (for example, C:\), OS is the operating system folder (for example, Windows or Winnt), and User_name is your user name. .... XLStart folder - Root\OS\Profiles\User_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart or Root\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart "Erika" wrote: I work with excel a lot and I have a lot of macros saved to my personal macro workbook - my question is can I save that personal.xls to a network drive instead of the XLstart folder and will it work the same? So your only options a
Root\OS\Profiles\User_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart or Root\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart Can it be redirected to my documents or a mapped network drive? Well, it seems that it will work with a roving profile, i.e. log on to any PC
on your network and excel will "know" where your personal.xls file is located. Do a search of the help file using "About the location of your settings" as the search criteria to read all about it. I have not tried it out personally but it seems to be a reasonable concept |

How about putting your personal.xls on the network drive, but then putting a
shortcut to that file inside your XLStart. Untested on a network, but I put my personal.xla in c:\. I put a shortcut to that file in my XLStart folder and when I opened excel, my personal.xla was there. Personally, I'd be hesitant to do this. What happens if the network is down, that share is down, or you're not connected to the network. On the other hand, I would keep backups on the network (and other places, too). You should be able to save your personal.xls file and just copy it into the XLStart folder when you get that new harddrive. (How often do you get that new harddrive???)
