Default Column labels showing as 1 2 3 4 5 instead of A B C D E - how to f

This is a weird one. Some XL files are opening with column labels being
numbered instead of lettered. But not all of them. (all files are pre 2007
version) Is there some way to change the column labels from numbers back to
letters in these files?
