dates switch to general format
I have an XLS workbook and the date formats switch to General format when I
close and reopen the file |

If you have format your dates.

dates switch to general format
When you select a cell that has a date that's displayed in general format, what
do you see in the formula bar? If you see the real date, then you may be looking at formulas.
