I have an XLS workbook and the date formats switch to General format when I
close and reopen the file

If you have format your dates.
I suspect that you need to click "Yes" if prompt to save changes
Try again...if it doesn't work, not post back

When you select a cell that has a date that's displayed in general format, what
do you see in the formula bar?

If you see the real date, then you may be looking at formulas.

In xl2003 menus:
Tools|Options|View tab|and make sure Formulas is not checked.
