emailed a file and dates on sheet they see are exactly 1 day and 4 years

Sounds like you are on the 1904 date system. This can be changed by either you or the recipient of your workbook at (pre 2007) Toolsoptionscalculation tab & change the setting for th 1904 date system. This change will affect otgher workbooks, so be careful.
