hi
on the file open dialog, click the down arrow to the left of tools. on my
version of excel, it's second icon from right. from the drop down, click list.

Default don't want see file name with extensions.

1: Open Windows Explorer
2: Win XP : Click on ToolsFolder Options
2: Vista : Click on OrganizeFolder and Search Options
3: On the View tab uncheck or check €œHide extensions for known file types"

Ron answered your questions, but I would recommend that you don't do this.

That's one way that viruses/malware can be sent.

You get a file that looks like:
FamilyPictures.jpg
and double click on it to see the pictures.

The bad news is that since you're hiding the extension, you didn't see that the
real name of the file was:
FamilyPictures.jpg.exe
or
FamilyPictures.jpg.vbs
or anything else that can cause damage.

One of the first things I do when I see a person's pc not showing extensions is
to turn them on and explain why it's a good idea.

I wouldn't do what you want!

I agree with you Dave

But I think that 90 % of my friends have this checked.

Default don't want see file name with extensions.

The first thing I thought when I read this post was "Don't do it."

Two experts have already agreed with me, so don't do it.
