Default validation list color

You want to keep the original BG color of the cell with dropdown list
menu?............no problem...........DV won't clear that out.

You want to keep the original colors of the cells that form the list range?

Can't be done.

You want a different color for an item after being selected in the DV
dropdown?

Use Conditional Formatting on the dropdown cell.
